6 FAQs on the Truma / Carver Thermocouple Trumatic S3002 & S5002

I have a Truma heater in my caravan, gas and 230 volts. When I start the gas it comes on, I get full ignition and then the heater turns itself off. It works fine on 230 v. I have plenty of gas and all my other appliances work fine in the gas mode.
It appears that you have a faulty thermocouple, our ref. 228052.
Hi I have a Truma vent with electronic ignition and it has twin burners. On ignition the pilot light ignites and you can see the thermo coupler glowing, but on turning the dial to any settings on releasing the dial the pilot light goes out, if i then depress straight away the pilot light ignites again from the thermo coupler but again releasing the dial it goes out. Any ideas it was working last year, what size regulator should be fitted as i think it has been changed.
It appears that the thermocouple is faulty. Our ref. 128052. Normally a workshop job to replace.
Hi I have a truma S3002. S353-17325300 in my caravan. The problem I have got is that the pilot lights but when I release the control valve the burner initially lights but then goes out. I have followed the lighting instructions, made sure that there is gas etc .This problem was there during the summer months also. Many thanks
It is almost certainly a faulty thermocouple that is causing the problem, our ref. 128052. You will need to get a Gas Safe engineer to fit this.
Problems with Truma S3002K in recently acquired van. Always have to hold the control valve down for at least 30 seconds, often longer, before it will light. Burns ok for a few minutes then it cuts off completely - the pilot and main burner both go off - sometimes with an audible clunk. Even if it lights the electronic ignition keeps clicking for about 2 minutes (timeout?) then the red light comes on - this happens every time regardless. Red light goes out when control valve returned to 0. If you switch the blower on while it's alight it shuts down immediately. Other gas appliances work ok. Supply voltage about 13V. The over temperature switch is permanently open circuit but shorting it out makes no difference. Been trying to understand out how the gas valve (magnetic insert?) works so I can diagnose the problem. Any help greatly will be appreciated.
The first item to change will be the thermocouple, our ref. 128052. You will need to remove the fire from the the caravan to do this.
The problem may be with the magneto but it is unlikely. The heat from the thermocouple generates a small current which is transmitted to the magneto and this current is sufficient to hold the gas valve open. The gas valve is manually opened when you depress the ignition button.
If the pilot flame of the fire goes out then current to the magneto will disappear and the gas valve will close preventing gas passing to the fire burner. If you have a faulty thermocouple then insufficient current may be generated to keep the gas valve open. Equally a faulty magneto could be the problem.
Hi Tom, The Truma S5002 fitted in my mobile home will not start. The The pilot light appears to ignite in the back window after multiple attempts but even after 30 secs with the knob depressed the main supply rarely ignites. I have fitted a new Duracel battery but still the same problem .
The main burner should ignite when you release the knob. If the flame goes out when you release the knob then it is most likely to be the thermocouple that is faulty.
our ref. 128052.
Hi Tom I have truma s3002. When I light it, it runs fine for 30 seconds then the gas cut out. Try and light it again and as soon as you release the knob it cuts out. leave it for half hour and it will light for 30 seconds or so. Any idea what the fault is?
Sounds like a faulty thermocouple, our part 128052. This would be the first item to replace.

Fiddly To Fit But Ideal

by Mrs Smith (04 Apr 2014)

Our Trumatic S5002 would not fire up, the pilot light worked but no main ignition. (Classic thermocouple failure). It was a but awkward to get the fire out to fit this part but well worth it. What a massive difference this made once fitted though, well worth the effort. The fire now lights instantly, no holding the plunger down for an age. You'll need the O ring flue seal as well to do the job as the old seal is destroyed when the fire is dismantled..

Parts arrived next day from Leisureshopdirect - great service. Why do Truma thermocouples prove so unreliable compared to those in domestic appliances? I don't know; maybe it's because they are exposed to road dirt and moisture under the caravan. But as they are not expensive from Leisureshopdirect, its just not worth removing the Truma (Carver) fire for a suspected thermocouple fault, and then not having one available to replace it. And don't forget to order a new flue seal ring as once disturbed it cannot be re-used. Again they are very cheap from Leisureshopdirect and if you are supplying it for someone else to fit, they won't re-install the fire unless you do supply a new flue seal (product ref 131432).
