Dometic ACX40G with Gas Canister cradle . GAS CANISTER NOT INCLUDED. Absorption cooler, with an integrated cradle for a gas cartridge – the only one on the market. Depending on ambient temperatures 1 canister should last a day approximiately.

You’ve found a dream place to stay but there’s no way to get there with the vehicle and no mains hook-up either ... Don’t worry, CombiCool ACX absorption coolers from Dometic give you maximum freedom in choosing your picnic site. They run on 12 volts in the vehicle and on 230 volts at home or at a campsite. In the great outdoors you simply switch over to gas mode. This provides cooling up to 30 °C below the ambient temperature. As this is part of the ACX family it has the elegant aluminium housing with the distinctive lid.

The ACX40G (Formerly RC1205GC) offers uncompromising independence, and are even able to operate with a gas cartridge (approx. 250 g). Ideal for camping in a tent and other last-minute activities – this uncomplicated source of energy is easy to take along. With a volume of 40 litres, and vertical space for large bottles, this decidedly goodvalue absorption unit has proven to be the ideal camping coolers. The ACX40G will keep their contents 30°C below the ambient temperature. In addition if anyone wants ice cubes in their drink: Ice cube trays are included.

We have been told by Dometic that a single canister can last upto a day (depending on ambient temperature). This makes it perfect for a weekend trip as you don't need to bring a large gas bottle as you would with other coolboxes, you can just use 2 or 3 small canisters instead!

This coolbox is 508 mm in depth and can be used on 12 volts, 230 volts and gas cartridges. Energy supply guaranteed anywhere it is used!

Please note: Gas canister not included.

THIS COOLBOX USES ABSORPTION TECHNOLOGY

What is the difference between the cooling technologies?
ABSORPTION COOLING
Details of distinguishing features:
  • Gas-powered cooling independent of electricity
  • Three way cooling – Gas, 12 volts DC or 230 volts AC
  • Silent operation
  • Cooling performance depending on the ambient temperature

The Technical Bit
A concentrated ammonia solution is heated in a boiler and expelled as vapour. The pressurised ammonia gas is then liquefied in a condenser. Supplied with hydrogen, it evaporates and in the process extracts heat from the storage container. The ammonia gas then enters the absorber where it is reabsorbed in a weak solution of ammonia. Finally, the saturated solution flows back to the boiler where the whole cycle starts again.

THERMOELECTRIC TECHNOLOGY
Details of distinguishing features:
  • 12 / 24 / 230 Volt
  • Independent of inclination
  • Lightweight and low-cost
  • Cooling performance depending on the ambient temperature

The Technical Bit
The thermoelectric principle was discovered by J. C. A. Peltier, which is why the temperature generating parts of thermoelectric systems are referred to as Peltier elements. Thermoelectrics are based on the fact that cold or heat energy (depending on the polarity) is generated when a DC current is conducted between different types of metal. The heating or cooling capacity is further enhanced by heat exchangers and air fans. Ideal for low and medium cooling volumes.

COMPRESSOR TECHNOLOGY
Details of distinguishing features:
  • Excellent cooling performance even at extreme ambient temperatures
  • Refrigeration and deep-freezing
  • 12 / 24 / 100 – 240 volts
  • Low power consumption – suitable for solar operation
  • Battery protection
  • Quiet operation with little vibration
  • Independent of inclination

The Technical Bit
Compressor units operate using a refrigerant that changes from liquid to gaseous state in the evaporator. The evaporation extracts heat from the interior of the cooling unit – the temperature drops. The compressor draws in the refrigerant, compresses it and passes it on to the condenser. Here, the absorbed heat is released to the atmosphere. The refrigerant liquefies again and flows to the evaporator, where the cycle begins again.

What A Piece Of Kit!

by Peter Dean (24 Mar 2021)
5 star review(5/5)
Been looking for something to buy for long weekends, 3-5 day sessions carp fishing out in the bush, not much fun on really mega hot days with warm drinks. Big problem however no electric, so along comes this beautiful 41l cool box by Dometic which works off standard small camping gas cartridges. Paid £319 from the Leisure Shop and looking round it was at least £40 more elsewhere. I haven't had a chance to use it yet. My girlfriend, knowing I was looking at this stepped up and said she would pickup the tab for my birthday present, so even better, happy days are here again! This is a big box, very well made and my limited observations of it so far are very positive. I will give a better use review in a few months time if I'm allowed but this cool box is the answer if you have no other options for power apart from gas cannisters and it uses approx 1 per 24 hours . 5 Stars!

Dometic Acx40g

Fantastic. Works well. Have only tried it on mains electric and gas canisters so far. Very surprised how little gas it used on minimum setting. Wish I'd purchased it sooner. Slight issue with delivery as first one arrived damaged, but this was very quickly dealt with by leisureshop direct. Many thanks

Review Of Dometic ACX40G

by Brendan (25 Aug 2020)
5 star review(5/5)
I initially thought it was not working it was so quiet (after plugging into mains). I have not used the gas cylinder or motor car plugin, but have no reason to believe that will not work as well the cooler does now. It is large, more than enough I think for a family of four’s camping needs. Although not very heavy, mobility may be an issue, but probably minor given that we will most likely always go for sites with electric hookup and the means to have your vehicle parked close by. Very impressed with the Dometic ACX40G cooler so far.

Made The Right Choice!

I decided to buy the DOMETIC ACX40G after looking at many different powered cool boxes, 2 way and 3 way fridges. Many cool boxes are very power hungry and fridges can be twice the price of the DOMETIC ACX40G. I decided this would be perfect for my needs as I have a VW camper. Typically I keep the coolbox in the awning, when travelling I can plug in to 12v, then, depending on my destination, switch to mains hookup or gas. In my experience, when empty and on mains, the box reached -2°c! I used it on gas, in the awning on a 29° day in July and it cooled down to 2° no problem. Just make sure it's level, otherwise cooling may be affected. Even made ice cubes!

Good Little Alrounder

Neat solution for camping / camper or day van fridge. Using in my vw transport kombi. Like that it captures spills in the compartment and has ribbed bottom so stuff isn't sat in liquid. Ice cube tray is tiny (6 half size cubes) and falls off element then melts quickly if bumped, I'll add some sort of elastic band at some point. Great for EHU and acts as a silent 100w cabin heater. Can't use gas in van or house as fumes danger. Recommends run in house for 24hrs on mains before trip. Looks sturdy but wouldn't say can use as seat.

Surprised

We were sceptical but the fridge did an amazing job with keeping our food and drinks chilled. We used 3 gas canisters for 4 days of camping.

The Jury's Still Out

by Wcg (01 Aug 2019)
4 star review(4/5)
Used for 6 days camping at Fairford 2019, where the temperatures ranged from around 12C ( nights ) to 28C.
Running for 12-14 hours each day it only used 2 gas cartridges, so can't fault it for that.

Despite following the instructions, getting it to light was a bit of a pig of a job, usually taking several minutes.

During the daytime it never got close to the claimed 'up to 30°C below ambient temperature', usually falling short by 8-10C despite trying just about every combination of settings on the controllers.

Switched off during the nights, where I found that by the following morning ( 7-8 hours later ) the interior temperature was the same as the outside temperature.....not too bad when that was around 12C, but it led to curdled milk when it was around 17C.

One thing they really need to look at for future models is fitting a lock/catch on the lid....ridiculous that a £300+ coolbox lacks what's standard on an el-cheapo £30 coolbox!
And as another reviewer has commented, it could also do with a built-in temperature gauge

Silent, Cold And Looks Good In Person.

by James (02 Jun 2019)
5 star review(5/5)
Great looking, the brushed finish really stands out. As a fridge I'm impressed, on mains and setting 7 it is very easy to accidentally freeze most of the contents. 12V keeps it cold but doesn't freeze quite as much. Setting 4-5 is still cold, cans will get condensation on them etc. For those who haven't used this type of fridge it's worth noting that anything directly touching the element (rear top of the inside) will likely freeze; do not put fruit/veg here.

And utterly silent, I'm very happy with it.

Awesome

Cold, freezes ice cubes (not many, but quickly) and absolutely silent, when I first plugged it in I was sure it was working due to the silence. This is perfect kit for camping!!!

Amazing Device, Very Robust, Outstanding Performance And Build

by Bob (13 Jul 2018)
5 star review(5/5)
Very robust, outstanding insulation, well made. you could stand and jump on it it's that sold.
The unit gets REALLY cold on gas, and makes ice-cubes easily on gas, which I wasn't sure was possible. The unit is incredibly efficient and literally silent on all 3 power-sources as there are no fans. The unit is solid-state in effect with no moving parts like fans to go wrong, like it invariably will on cheap models, so it should last a lifetime.
This unit is the only one on the market that uses disposable gas cartridges, the other Dometic model that also used cartridges [RC 1205 GC] has gone end-of-life and is replaced by this one. This model is supposed to have +5 degrees see cooling from ambient over the previous [above] model also, and I have no reason to doubt that, if anything it'd give you ice in mid 30's and higher [ the ice holder is fairly small, you just get 6 cubes, but they are created fairly quickly, often before you've finished you previous drink ;-) ]
Because it is silent, you just can't tell it's on, when on AC/DC as there is no LED or otherwise any indication it's on, you have to guess, as it's silent as well as gas, but on gas you can see the gas flame by looking down the 'chimney' at the back. You have to infer it's working as heat rises from the heat-exchanger on the back on AC/DC. That's a good thing though, as it won't disturb your sleep when it's just outside your tent. When on AC the lack of a power LED isn't so much of a problem, but in my car on DC, i want the reassurance the plug is still in the lighter socker and, in general, they forever pop out when driving [in general, not related to this model].
It also has no temperature reading, which on a unit of this price-bracket is pretty short-sighted as the 'cooling level' just has a rotary adjustment knob. I just dropped a £4 min-max digital thermomiter in the bottom and i'm good.
Surprising [but trivial] oversights aside, this unit is actually outstandi

After much research decided that this Dometic with gas canister was right for me, this product did not disappoint, easy to operate, amazingly efficient, generally used 1 canister over 24 hr on mid setting which was perfectly good for one of our hottest bank holidays! A real gem!

5 star review(5/5)
Does exactly what it says. Cools superbly and using the cannisters couldn't be easier. Perhaps in the long run may prove not to be as economical but then there's no paying for connectors or bottle and no extra storage space required. Cannister lasts 24-26hrs. Looks classy and very stylish, only concern is if it will mark easily

Handy Cool Box

by Mr Gardner (04 Aug 2017)
5 star review(5/5)
Dometic Cool box ACX40G. I used this over a four day weekend visit to a music festival. I stored the coolbox in the awning next to our campervan, which does not have a fridge. This why I bought the coolbox. I ran it at home on 240v to get it cold then 12v whilst travelling the six hour journey, then finally used a gas canister at the campsite. The gas canisters just push in and seem to held magnetically. It was easy to light the flame on the gas setting. I just pushed the igniter button down about three times whilst holding the gas button down. You can see the flame in a small hole at the back. You can also feel the heat rising from the vent as well. The gas canister lasted around 24 hours on the middle setting. The canisters are about £1.50 each so for a short break this is fine. The coolbox itself is well made and worked fine keeping all our food and drinks nice and cold, just like a proper fridge! Delivery was excellent and swift.

Dometic RC1205GC

by Mr Stevens (03 Sep 2016)
5 star review(5/5)
I've only used the Dometic 1205GC on gas canisters so far but it was excellent. Kept food and drinks very cold, even on lowest setting, over a hot long bank holiday weekend. Only negative is it's pretty heavy, even empty and suspect in colder weather it might get too cold inside as it refrigerated to a certain number of C below ambient. It's silent when running, which is great in a tent. Overall a very good product.

Really impressed with this fridge! Gas canister last 24 hours with the setting on high! I did have to turn it down as it froze some chicken I had put in!! Only down side is that it is heavy but still the best bit of camping kit I've bought apart from a tent!!!!

The Best One So Far

by Kellins (18 Jul 2015)
5 star review(5/5)
We had a bit of a fault with ours but it was sorted out by Leisureshopdirect's amazing customer service and support. We bought this piece of kit as recommended by several friend's and it works great. Even keeps ice going on a weekend trip using the canisters! This is the third fridge we have bought and the best so far so no need to keep looking.
