THIS COOLBOX USES ABSORPTION TECHNOLOGY

What is the difference between the cooling technologies?
ABSORPTION COOLING
Details of distinguishing features:
  • Gas-powered cooling independent of electricity
  • Three way cooling – Gas, 12 volts DC or 230 volts AC
  • Silent operation
  • Cooling performance depending on the ambient temperature

The Technical Bit
A concentrated ammonia solution is heated in a boiler and expelled as vapour. The pressurised ammonia gas is then liquefied in a condenser. Supplied with hydrogen, it evaporates and in the process extracts heat from the storage container. The ammonia gas then enters the absorber where it is reabsorbed in a weak solution of ammonia. Finally, the saturated solution flows back to the boiler where the whole cycle starts again.

THERMOELECTRIC TECHNOLOGY
Details of distinguishing features:
  • 12 / 24 / 230 Volt
  • Independent of inclination
  • Lightweight and low-cost
  • Cooling performance depending on the ambient temperature

The Technical Bit
The thermoelectric principle was discovered by J. C. A. Peltier, which is why the temperature generating parts of thermoelectric systems are referred to as Peltier elements. Thermoelectrics are based on the fact that cold or heat energy (depending on the polarity) is generated when a DC current is conducted between different types of metal. The heating or cooling capacity is further enhanced by heat exchangers and air fans. Ideal for low and medium cooling volumes.

COMPRESSOR TECHNOLOGY
Details of distinguishing features:
  • Excellent cooling performance even at extreme ambient temperatures
  • Refrigeration and deep-freezing
  • 12 / 24 / 100 – 240 volts
  • Low power consumption – suitable for solar operation
  • Battery protection
  • Quiet operation with little vibration
  • Independent of inclination

The Technical Bit
Compressor units operate using a refrigerant that changes from liquid to gaseous state in the evaporator. The evaporation extracts heat from the interior of the cooling unit – the temperature drops. The compressor draws in the refrigerant, compresses it and passes it on to the condenser. Here, the absorbed heat is released to the atmosphere. The refrigerant liquefies again and flows to the evaporator, where the cycle begins again.

How many 750ml bottles can you fit in?
We checked with a 750ml Evian bottle and in an ACX40 you can fit 5 bottles in a row and 3 downwards. You can then fit 5 if you put them on there side and stack them 1 straight 3 side wards and 1 straight the other side, so roughly 20 bottles you should be able to get in.

Just As Good, If Not Better

by Miss C Walker (02 Oct 2018)
5 star review(5/5)
I had a Royal 3 way fridge for many years and thought it was fab, although a real pain to light on gas. Kept everything cold no matter how long you’re away for. Eventually it started tripping fuses on 12v....the final straw came when it stopped working on 240v! IT HAD TO GO!!!! This Dometic is the exact same size, internally and externally, but is far easier to light on gas. Works just as well, if not better, than the old one. Good temperature controls for gas and 240v. Clear instructions. I’m pleased I bought this one, rather than the Royal again, but it does lack two features that were great on the old one. One was a spirit level to ensure it works well, the other was a gauge that showed (when connected using gas) the gas level/pressure. To remedy this, I prised the spirit level off the old one and will have to keep a closer eye on the gas cylinder!

Brilliant!!

by Mrs R (01 Jun 2017)
5 star review(5/5)
Excellent. Bought it to use in my caravan awning - the fridge I have in the van is very temperamental to light on gas, this one lit instantly. Stress free!!!

Coped very well on my recent festival in baking heat.

One tip though is cool everything down on mains before you set off, keep it plugged in whilst in the car & it'll work great. I naively took it empty, for lifting it out of the car ease, and put everything in when I got there. It struggled to get down to a cold temperature until the temperature dropped at night. Lesson learned.

Cold drinks, food and milk was pure bliss :-)

Top Quality Fridge

by Darren Nixon (12 Sep 2016)
5 star review(5/5)
I bought this to replace an ageing 3 way fridge which was past its best. This really is a league apart and does keep everything icy cold. I was concerned that it wouldn't be that good on 12V but has recently kept everything cold on a 7 hour return trip from Devon. I'd thoroughly recommend this fridge.

Cracking Bit Of Kit!

by Mr Warren (02 Jun 2016)
5 star review(5/5)
Really pleased with this fridge. Arrived soon after online order, and was soon unpacked and plugged into the mains 24 hrs before the bank holiday camping trip. Swapped to 12V for the 4-5 hr car journey, which kept all the contents nice and cool, and then connected the gas hose, regulator and bottle (which you have to buy separately) once we arrived at the camp site. Spent 4 days on the camp site and never had any concerns with this fridge. It took a little bit of fiddling to get the gas fired up, but once it was running, it kept going like a dream. Managed to keep all the meat and milk really cold, so tested it out on a few beers and some rose and white wine, and none of that went off either! The crowning glory was producing G&Ts for our neighbours at the campsite, with ice (from the fridge's little ice tray) and a slice of chilled lemon as well. We bought this as we had concerns about our Cool Box lasting the course. It's a real pfaff trying to get fresh food every 24-48 hours, and we wanted to minimise the trips to the shops once there, so we could enjoy the surrounding area without worrying about the local Sainsbury's opening times (and stock availability over a Bank Holiday weekend). So far, we are really pleased with this Dometic RC2200 Combicool 3 way fridge, and don't hesitate to recommend it to others. Just remember to follow the instructions when you first get it going before every camping trip!

Damaged On Arrival

by Mr Haygarth (27 May 2016)
5 star review(5/5)
The fridge unit arrived promptly. The packaging was good but the unit was damage probably dropped prior to shipping. Contacted support prompt response and collection of damaged unit and delivery on replacement in a 2 days. Exellence service. The chiller has been run on mains supply and chills very well. Producing ice cubes. Will be trying on gas on next use . Over all the fridge unit is sturdy and works well. A good purchase .

EXCELLENT

by MRS GROOM (26 May 2016)
5 star review(5/5)
This is a replacement for a previous fridge of this design which lasted just over 20 years I wonder if this will last as long? Very useful being 3 way keeps everything really cold and even has the ice cube tray. Lots of room for bottles etc; We were so pleased with the previous one we had no question in replacing like for like, although I would generally buy British if possible.

Very pleased - our order came exactly when we specified and the fridge has been working from the minute we plugged it in. Haven't taken it camping yet but can't wait to test it in the field and am sure it will do the job - it's spacious, light and chills down very quickly.
